Introduction
Peter Hutton was born in 1944 in Detroit and received his BFA and MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Starting out as a painter, Hutton began making films in the 1970s. Since then, he has produced over 20 films that can be characterized as poetic portraits of cities and locations around the world.
“Peter Hutton is one of cinema’s most ardent and poetic portraitists of city and landscape. A former merchant seaman, he has spent nearly forty years voyaging around the world, often by cargo ship, to create sublimely meditative, luminously photographed, and intimately diaristic studies of place. The artist’s work is dedicated to reawakening a more contemplative and spontaneous way of observing and envisioning the world, whether seeking remembrance of a city’s fading past or reflecting on nature’s fugitive atmospheric effects. Hutton sculpts with time ; each film unfolds in silent reverie, with a series of extended single shots taken from a fixed position, harking back to cinema’s origins and to traditions of painting and still photography.” - Hans Ulrich Obrist and Beatrix Ruf
Exhibition at La Loge
The exhibition ‘Figures, Landscapes & Time’ by Peter Hutton will take place at La Loge from November 28 – February 1 and will feature an installation on two levels featuring a range of the artist’s work. This exhibition will also be the European debut of Three Landscapes, Hutton’s most recent film series that explores three unique locations : industrial Detroit, the bucolic areas of the Hudson River Valley and the salt flats of Ethiopia. One of the unique aspects of this exhibition is that the show at La Loge will feature Peter Hutton’s oeuvre as film installations rather than single screen classic cinema projections. By developing such a display in close collaboration with Peter Hutton himself, the works gain a sculptural quality that goes beyond classic cinematographic display. La Loge will also be organizing a series of side programs around the exhibition. These events will consist of discursive lectures bringing specific issues within Peter Hutton’s work into perspective, a public conversation with the artist and a workshop for students. The aim of the exhibition is to celebrate Peter Hutton’s unique vision and to raise awareness of his work here in Brussels and in Europe.
