This course examines the conditions under which the plastic space of the European art tradition of modern times was created, analyzing the transition from an art of iconic presentation of the divine to one of both mimetic and ideal representation of the world, based primarily on references to Greco-Roman antiquity, the establishment of the rules of linear and atmospheric perspective, and the primacy given to drawing and the composition of historia. He pays particular attention to the context in which the works were created: artists' biographies, political, religious and socio-economic history, and the history of ideas and other arts.
