Photo: Sophie Nuytten   We welcome Sammy Baloji at erg to present his extensive work. Baloji is a visual artist and photographer. Since 2005, he has been exploring the memory and history of the Democratic Republic of Congo. His work is an ongoing exploration of the Katanga region’s cultural, architectural and industrial heritage and an interrogation of the effects of Belgian colonisation. How cultural clichés continue to shape collective memories and thus allow social and political power games to continue to dictate human behaviour is intrinsic to his practice. As he stated in a recent interview: «I’m not interested in colonialism as nostalgia, or in it as a thing of the past, but in the continuation of that system.»

In 2008, he co-founded Picha, which initiated the Biennale de Lubumbashi. His work has been exhibited worldwide, including documenta14 and biennials in Sharjah, Sydney, Lyon, and Venice.

Nous accueillons Sammy Baloji à l'erg pour présenter son vaste travail. Baloji est un Artiste visuel et un photographe, Sammy Baloji explore depuis 2005 la mémoire et l’histoire de la République démocratique du Congo. Son travail est une exploration continue du patrimoine culturel, architectural et industriel de la région du Katanga et une interrogation sur les effets de la colonisation belge. La manière dont les clichés culturels continuent de façonner les mémoires collectives et permettent ainsi aux jeux de pouvoir sociaux et politiques de continuer à dicter le comportement humain fait partie intégrante de sa pratique. Comme il l'a déclaré lors d'une récente interview : «Je ne m'intéresse pas au colonialisme en tant que nostalgie, ou en tant que chose du passé, mais à la continuation de ce système.»

En 2008, il a cofondé Picha, qui a initié la Biennale de Lubumbashi. Son travail a été exposé dans le monde entier, notamment à la Documenta14 et aux biennales de Sharjah, Sydney, Lyon et Venise.
