Plaçant la recherche au cœur de son programme, l’erg propose une formation de troisième cycle au sein de l’École doctorale 20 « Art et sciences de l’art » en partenariat avec les universités et les Écoles Supérieures des Arts belges francophones (ESA).

Son programme consiste en l’élaboration et la présentation d’un travail artistique et théorique conduit en étroite corrélation. Le but du doctorat en « Art et sciences de l’art » est de mener en parallèle une démarche de haut niveau dans le domaine des arts et un travail de recherche théorique, débouchant sur une thèse.

La thèse de doctorat en « Art et sciences de l’art » se compose d’une partie artistique – l’élaboration et la présentation d’une œuvre nourrie de la recherche théorique – et d’une partie théorique écrite – un travail de recherche original, proposant une réflexion et un approfondisse- ment critiques en interaction avec le travail artistique du doctorant – ; l’ensemble étant examiné et évalué comme un tout. La formation dispensée offre un cadre spécifique aux recherches et à la pratique de chaque doctorant procurant, d’une part, de quoi affiner des outils théoriques et méthodologiques dans des séminaires et autres activités universitaires spécialisées, et d’autre part, les conditions nécessaires à la mise en œuvre de la réalisation artistique partie intégrante du doctorat.

Les recherches s’y inscrivent dans une dynamique interdisciplinaire, en ce qui concerne la rencontre des disciplines tant artistiques que scientifiques. L’école favorise les synergies entre les différents types de recherches personnelles des doctorants et la mise en dialogue des problématiques propres et communes aux différents médias artistiques. Tout titulaire d’un master à finalité approfondie d’une ESA ou d’un diplôme jugé équivalent peut s’inscrire à la formation doctorale et aux études menant au doctorat dans une Université de la Communauté française de Belgique en partenariat avec une ESA. Le candidat doit rédiger un projet de thèse et le faire approuver par deux personnalités qu’il estime susceptibles de diriger son travail. Il choisit l’une parmi les membres du personnel académique de l’Université, porteurs d’un titre de docteur obtenu après la soutenance d’une thèse, faisant partie de l’École doctorale – le promoteur – et l’autre parmi les enseignants de l’ESA – le co-promoteur. Celle-ci met à disposition du doctorant ses infrastructures pour l’élaboration de son travail artistique.

Placing research at the heart of its curriculum, erg proposes a third cycle degree within the “Art and art sciences” program at the École doctorale 20, in partnership with universities and Écoles Supérieures des Arts (esa) in Belgium’s French Community. Its curriculum aims at elaborating and pre-senting closely correlated artistic and theoretical works. The aim of the “Art and art sciences” program is to carry out a high-standard art project in parallel withhtheoretical research leading to a PhD thesis.

The PhD thesis in “Art and art sciences” includes an artistic segment – elaborating and presenting a work informed by theoretical research – and a written, theoretical dissertation – an original work of research offering a critical reflection and a critical development linked with the doctoral student’s artistic work. The two works are examined and evaluated jointly as a single entity.

The training offers a framework both specific to each student’s research and practice, providing the means to refine theoretical and methodological tools during seminars and other specialized academic activities, and gives the necessary conditions to the elaboration of the art project integral to the doctorate. The work of research follows a multidisciplinary dynamic shaped by the exchanges at play between artistic and scientific disciplines. The school encourages synergies between the different personal works of research and favors a dialogue around issues at once specific and common to the various artistic media.

All in-depth Master graduates from an esa or in possession a diploma recognized as equivalent may register to the doctoral training and to doctoral studies in the French Community universities in partnership with an esa. Applicants need to de-fine a thesis project and have it approved by two personalities of their choice likely to supervise their work. One of them – the promoter – must belong to the university faculty, hold a doctorate obtained after the defense of a thesis, and be a part of the École doctorale, while the second one – the co-promoter – must belong to the esa faculty. The latter school provides the infrastructures necessary for the elaboration of the students’ artistic work.
