Stan Douglas réalise depuis la fin des années 1980 des films, photos et installations qui ré-interprètent des lieux particuliers ou événements du passé. Ces œuvres prennent souvent comme point de départ les institutions locales, à partir desquelles des questionnements plus larges peuvent être identifiés. Recourant fréquemment à l’usage de technologies modernes ou obsolètes, Douglas s’approprie des genres Hollywoodiens (comme l’enquête criminelle ou le Western) et emprunte aux classiques littéraires (plus particulièrement à Samuel Beckett, Herman Melville et Franz Kafka) des contextes readymade à ses projets complexes soigneusement élaborés. 
 
 
 
Stan Douglas parlera de sa pratique, plus spécifiquement de sa relation avec la théorie. La conférence sera suivie d’une discussion avec Eric C.H. de Bruyn (Professeur d’Art Moderne et Contemporain à l’Université de Leiden). 
 
 
 
Stan Douglas est un artiste plasticien qui vit et travaille à Vancouver. Depuis 1990, ses films, vidéos et photos sont internationalement présentés, notamment aux Documenta IX, X et XI (1992, 1997, 2002) et à trois Biennales de Venise (1990, 2001, 2005). Plusieurs institutions d’envergure européennes ou nord-américaines lui ont consacré des expositions solo, et une large rétrospective (Past Imperfect : Works 1986-2007) a été organisée par le Württembergischer Kunstverein et la Staatsgalerie Stuttgart à l’automne 2007. En 1986 l’artiste organisa une exposition itinérante du travail réalisé sur les médias par Samuel Beckett pour la Vancouver Art Gallery (''Samuel Beckett : Teleplays''), et il fut le co-curateur, en 2006, de ''Beyond Cinema : Art of Projection'' pour le Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. Entre 2004 et 2006, il a été professeur à l’Universität der Künste de Berlin, et il enseigne actuellement au Art Center College of Design en Californie.

Since the late 1980s, Stan Douglas has created films, photographs, and installations that reexamine particular locations or past events. His works often take their points of departure in local settings, from which broader issues can be identified. Making frequent use of new as well as outdated technologies, Douglas appropriates existing Hollywood genres (including murder mysteries and the Western) and borrows from classic literary works (notably Samuel Beckett, Herman Melville, and Franz Kafka) to create ready-made contextual frameworks for his complex, thoroughly researched projects. 
 
 
 
Stan Douglas will talk about his work, and more specifically about its relationship with theory. The lecture will be followed by a discussion with Eric C.H. de Bruyn (Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Leiden University). 
 
 
 
Stan Douglas is a visual artist who lives and works in Vancouver. Since 1990 his films, videos and photographs have been seen in exhibitions internationally, including Documentas IX, X and XI (1992, 1997, 2002) and three Venice Biennales (1990, 2001, 2005). Solo exhibitions of his work have been have been presented by the most prominent museums in Europe and North America and a comprehensive survey, ''Past Imperfect : Works 1986–2007'', was mounted by the Württembergischer Kunstverein and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart in the fall of 2007. In 1986 he organized a touring exhibition of Samuel Beckett’s media works for the Vancouver Art Gallery, ''Samuel Beckett : Teleplays'', and in 2006 co-curated ''Beyond Cinema : Art of Projection'' for the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin.
