Between Wind and Stick
(Entre Vent et Bâton)
2014

Two Archives
(Deux Archives)
2011-2012

Between Wind and Stick
2014
Audio, slide projection, rattan sticks, metal

Tabatabai and Afrassiabi’s recent installation Between Wind and Stick evolves around an audio recording with different ritual healers in which they talk about a spirit-possession ritual practiced near the strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf. They explain about various possessing ‘winds’ believed to come from across seas as far as India and east Africa (the historical trade route) that diffuse permanently inside and among the body of men and women, becoming their life time appendage and thus making them members of a cult group called ‘people of air’. Interlacing extraterritorial winds, seas and lands with the body through these possession rituals is a means towards a bodily ‘cartography’ of a very different geopolitics. A central device in these possession rituals is the rattan stick. Picked and decorated according to the winds’ demands, it is used first as a beating stick by the shaman to release the possessed, and then as a dancing cane by the wind while the affected goes into trance. Almost each wind or possessed person has an own specific rattan stick, at once an afflicting and fulfilling device for negotiation. ‘Between Wind and Stick’ is an attempt in understanding possession as a subjectivity defined by the fluid intersecting of body and geography.

Two Archives
2011-12
Variable media and dimensions

Two Archives is the first of a series of works by Nasrin Tabatabai and Babak Afrassiabi which depart from two archives of the 20th century. One is the collection of Western modern art from the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art – a large collection that was inaugurated in 1977 together with the opening of the museum as part of the government's rapid modernisation project in various fields, including culture. The other archive is that of British Petroleum (BP) related to the company's origin in Iran from 1908 to 1951, when it found the first oil in the Middle East. This archive was produced simultaneous to the company's rapid growth in Iran and the building of the world largest oil refinery and modern city Abadan.
In Two Archives the artists do not simply display materials from the two archives, but rather appropriate some of their features into new objects. In an unlikely parallel reading of the BP archive and the Western collection of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, these objects set forth an undecidable narrative of modernity that is as yet traceable in our today’s notions of contemporaneity and geopolitics.
